According to the history of western arts, sketch has been regarded as a basic but necessary skill for fine arts. That is why sketch has taken an important role in academic trainings. And furthermore, sketch is not only a basic training, but it also breeds creation, which has a high irreplaceable value. An artist once said, “Sketching is different from all those formal practices. It’s more like a diary which record your truest feelings. Compared to the art works which have been seriously constructed, sketch is freer and more spontaneous.

In this exhibition, we present the sketches by artists from both China and Russia. Since the art education of former Soviet Union were introduced into China in 1950s, its attitude towards art made great influence on the development of Chinese oil paintings. And through these sketches, they reveal the process of art creations and the connection between two different cultures.
