Feiyun Yang’s oil paintings and sketches go hand in hand. The sketches inspire the oil painting, and also form a complete world themselves. Sketches become Feiyun Yang’s art diary. No matter complex lines or simple surface, all are precise, exquisite and delicate. Much like the light ink stroke in Chinese paintings, such as Dong Qichang’s landscape, Yang instead uses pencil, charcoal and ball-pen. But also, one can see the characteristic of western masters such as Da Vinci, Rafael and Ingre’s. In fact, his sketches reflect his personality, unpretentious and delicate. He did not sketch dramatic light and shade like the other artist at the time, and he did not show off his drawing skill when sketch space and figures. He treats sketches in a playful yet calmly manner.
Feiyun Yang’s sketches are relax and genuine, instinctive and emotional. From his sketches we can see his diligence and acumen. If we compared his oil paintings to the thick accumulated ink paintings, his sketches are like delicate small ink painting, from which we can feel its gentleness and warmth. No one can create such brilliant sketches if he is not knowledgeable at both Eastern and Western art and self-cultivation.
