Technological achievements proclaimed the arrival of the digitalization of mass culture in the 21st century. Over a century’s evolution, the world of cartoons and comics enjoys the flourishment with the rise of virtualization and visualization. Correspondingly it cultivates the new aesthetic taste from the fantastic forms and pleasurable exaggerations.

In accordance with the recent trend on visual culture, this exhibition reflects the interaction between comics and contemporary art from various perspectives, so to offer an insight of the artistic potential that can be activated in the pictorial worlds of cartoons and comics. The show integrates celluloid of some classic cartoon series (both from Asia and West), that is for the most part anchored in our collective memory of images; Comics liberate itself from image-text narrative and fundamentally refine its visual elements, this act corresponds to artistic reflection on the media aspect of the comics; the diverse references made by contemporary artists with appropriation, deconstruction and reconstruction to the content and form of the pictorial cosmos treads the line between the trivial and the high culture.

The word ‘hedonistic’ is derived from hedonism, the mass culture that prevails under consumerism may exude more of an affirmative impulse; stemming from Pop spirit, nevertheless, by embracing the freedom offered by popular medium, this ‘hedonistic’ ensures a constant enrichment of visual material.
