The oriental philosophy is a mysterious and enormous system, which is always regarded as abstract and even difficult to interpret. The idea of “spirit, energy and soul” can only to be sensed, not explained; so “imageries” is often used to express the concept by generating the universe and the objective existence around us. Hence, the creation of “art” is just the form of “imageries” which possessed spirits and energies. Although it does not represent the universe, it reveals the order of it.

How to convey the inner meanings in a faithful, expressive and elegant way and meanwhile maintaining its artistic conception has been the eternal pursuit for literati. Compared to the western art system where painters are skilled at depicting exact figures, the eastern art is better in showing the inner spirit. It does not merely require skills and techniques, but also one’s self-cultivation, and the perfection of aesthetic concept. So from the old days, artists in the eastern world experienced the magnificent landscapes and re-presented them on the paper with their personal feelings and understanding.

In the context of contemporary arts, artists with the backgrounds of oriental philosophy keep exploring new dimensions in their creations. No matter senior or new, while improving themselves in all aspects, they confront all those conflicts and situations in the society today, rather than just following the old traditions or lay stress on “national characteristics” or “exotic color”. Though the works exhibits are made of different materials for different themes, they all present the humanistic concern and gracefulness, which are sincere and thought-provoking.
